Repeat offender

  • P.R. showed up late again in a taxi, at 7:05
  • Chrissy Cook showed up nearly 10 minutes late for stretch, without Radde saying anything
  • Last week Jim Hinkley attended a school for EMD's in the Bay area (this school is not always located at the same place)
  • Jim Hinkley was asked to go overtown today to observe the new Cummins plant engine get broken in

late update

1. Why do the ICE tech's only have to pass their finals by 70%, while the mechanics have to pass with a 80%?
2. Today the Plant Mechanics finished the last of 4 unplanned (power pack only) overhauls. This was mandated by upper management in Rosemead due to "cleaner" packs becoming available.
3. Rob Radde was informed of sub-par/outdated rigging points located within U-8. This was a concern for the Mechanics as they need areas to rig off of for pack replacement.

U-10

Fuel filter change. Jim and Matt both noticed fuel flowing out of the top of the raycor housing. Concluded that the new parameters for the day tank have a higher fill capacity (7/8ths full now) and now must be valved closed to do a raycor fuel filter change.

overdue...

Last week Justin Hernandez and Matt Burch spent Monday - Thursday @ S.S.I.D. with Johnny Hardwick. There was continued apprenticeship training in our books, as well as hands on training on the lathe.

Yesterday Justin Hernandez and Matt Burch worked on the oil-cooler end caps for U-15. We drilled and tapped holes for pipe. Plumbing was added, with a pressure gauge. The caps are now ready for test. Jim Hinkley replace the fuel filters in U-14, and declared that unit OK for service. General housekeeping was done as well.

The only person representing the I.C.E. crew was Doug Laflin. Both Journeymen were overtown, and Jay Martin is on vacation.

This morning Justin Hernandez and Matt Burch requested to take U-15 out of service for an overdue planned 4000 hour check. Currently waiting on two units in the CEMS shelter to cal before the operator will give us the clearance for our work to begin.

Valley Guys offsite

Brian, Doug, and Vincente have finished all they could do in Unit 15. We are now waiting for more parts. Four more powerpacks have been ordered from the factory and we are waiting for them to be built & shipped out to Mira Loma/Valley. The job has come to a halt due to lack of parts. The airbox and oil pan have both been wiped clean.

Unit 15 ring replacement job

Steve and Matt from Valley Power Systems arrived last Monday (3/29/10) to start warranty work on Unit 15. The job is to replace the top two rings on every piston. Job still not complete, engine is offline thru the weekend. Justin and Matt Burch are going to replace a mini-pack today (4/3/10) in cylinder number 5.

Yesterday (4/2/10) the air box was cleaned. Jim Hinkley has been the foreman upgrade during the past week as Dave Montgomery has been upgraded to Plant Superintendent. ICE techs have been working in control panel in Unit 15 to investigate alarms. Both Matt G. and John C. left half day (unbeknownst to Dave Montgomery) leaving both apprentices representing the ICE department.

3/18/10

Justin Hernandez and Matt Burch completed the plumbing to U-8's day tank. The radiator structural bolts are all back in place, with the exception of no nuts being used on the bottom 6 bolts having no nuts as per DM. (There is no access to the nuts)
Collins, John Martin, and Doug Laflin installed the fuel level sensor. The tank filled to just shy of 3/4 tank and stopped calling for fuel. MB did an additional visual around the tank for leaks- none found. Day tank declared OK for service.
Pending idle/start test.

Unit 8 day tank

Yesterday we had the PEO report of a diesel leak inside unit 8. Upon further investigation we found a hairline crack in the bottom right side of the day-tank. The unit was taken out of service and Justin Hernandez and Matt Burch removed the tank and MB made a new weld pass to fix the crack.
In addition to U-8, there was a bad injector found in unit 15. JH and MB took the unit out of service and replaced all oil, (NO filters- we did not have enough in stock), replaced the injector- and then started the unit for testing. Unit was declared OK by JH.

lack of Journeyman for a day...

12/31- 7:00am-3:30
Collins on vacation
Goldenhar took the day off, leaving Martin & Laughlin to be on duty for the day at the plant.
Had treatment issues with Unit 15, with Hite ultimately declaring the unit "Emergency use only' until Monday, when a journeyman could address the issue.
